Hello my lovely seamstresses! In this week's project we are going to learn how to sew this must have wire headband. You can make it in an autumn inspired print and wear it as the perfect accessory for fall and it will keep your ears warm! I found this vintage floral print at the thrift store.

ree

For this project you will need-

-Your choice of fabric (cotton works well)

-Sewing Machine

-Ruler

-Sewing Shears and or rotary cutter and mat

-Iron

-Tailors chalk/ disappearing ink pen

-20 gauge wire

-Wire cutters

-Small wire pliers

-Liquid Stitch (optional)

-Fray Check (optional

ree

After you have washed and ironed your fabric the first step is to use your ruler and cutting tools to measure and cut a 9 by 36 inch rectangle. To make this easier I folded my fabric in half and cut 9 by 18 inches (do not cut the folded side)

ree

ree

Fold your rectangle in half ride sides together and press the fold with your iron.

ree

Sew a straight line with a regular sewing needle all the way across the fabric along the fold about a quarter of an inch from the top. (This will make a pocket for the wire preventing it from moving around inside the headband.)

ree

Now use your disappearing pen to mark 7 inches from the edge on both sides.

ree

Next cut two small slits on the folded edge one on each 7 inch mark. (being careful not to cut into the stitch.

ree

(Optional) Add some fray check to the two cuts if you want to keep from fraying-Let dry

ree

Now sew around the edges using a straight stitch remembering to leave a gap to turn you

work. Sew at a right angle shown above for a bow tie look. Sew at a curve shown below for a bunny ear look.

ree

ree

Use your sewing shears to cut off any excess fabric along your stitch.

ree

Next Use wire cutters to cut 40 inches of the 20 gauge wire

ree

Thread the wire through the pocket inserting through one cut and out through the other.

ree

On each end of the wire make a loop and twist excess wire around until flat.

ree

You can use small wire pliers to tightly wrap the wire edge around so that it lies flat and is not poking out.

ree

After inserting the wire through the pocket it should look something like this.

ree

Now the fun part! Turning this thing inside out! Use your wire end to push the fabric inside out and back towards the opening you left.

ree

Now that it is right side out iron it flat.

ree

The final step is to close up the opening. You can sew this gap closed or you can use my favorite trick and close it with some liquid stitch.

ree

Let it dry and now your beautiful headband is done! Have fun and play around with the different ways you can bend and twist the wire to style.

If you make this project don't forget to post a picture of it on instagram and tag @paintedlayersstudio I would love to see your work!
