Updated: Aug 7, 2018

Hi! Welcome back to the blog where we learn to sew a wardrobe out of thrifted materials! This week's tutorial will teach you how to make your own reusable facial rounds out of thrifted cotton and washcloths. These are so nice to have to wash your face and to remove makeup without using a full size washcloth. It saves waste from buying the disposable kind and saves room in the bathroom.

First things first. Click on the link below to download the free pattern. This way you will start with the perfect size circles. One is for a standard size round and the other is a little larger.

Recommended Tools and Supplies-

-Pattern pieces

-Terry cloth/washcloths

-Thrifted cotton

-Serger Machine

-Fabric shears

-Tailors chalk/ disappearing ink pen

-Wonder clips

-Pattern weights

-Choose a terry cloth or washcloth and cotton fabric that are contrasting also choose a contrasting color for your serger thread. I matched this blue washcloth with a brown cotton that has matching light blue flowers. Pretty!

-After choosing your size and cutting out your pattern pieces, place a pattern weight (or a crystal) to secure the pattern as you trace around the circle with either tailor's chalk or a disappearing ink pen. Tip-The pen works much better on terry cloth.

-Next use fabric shears to cut out your circles.

-Now put wrong sides together one circle of terry cloth and one circle of cotton fabric of matching sizes.

-Secure the pieces with wonder clips. Then take them to your serger.

-Thread your serger with your contrasting thread

-Use a size 90/14 needle or one that is suitable for medium to thicker weight fabric to avoid skipped stitches.

-To make a round circle shape and to avoid a teardrop do not cut into the circle at an angle with the serger blade. Rather start with the blade along the outside edge of the fabric and gradually move inwards. (This may take a little practice.)

-So to start you are not cutting off any fabric then as you sew work up to cutting off about a quarter f an inch.

-To turn. Stop sewing. Place the needle down into the fabric. Lift the presser foot and use your hands to turn the fabric. Continue this process as needed to serge all the way around.

-When you get to the end overlap your starting stitches about half an inch to secure.

Make as many as you would like, these also make great gifts. They can be washed and re-used. Throw them in a mesh washer bag to keep them together in the wash. (An upcoming project idea perhaps?) Happy Sewing!
